SHAFT HOLLOW

The buildings of Olga Coal Company Portal #2 are now torn down. The bucket cables and the bucket that carried the slate are carried away. The bathhouse, the ofice, the lamp house, the cage, they are all gone.

THE TIPPLE

THE OLD COAL SHAFT
BROUGHT UP THE COAL
AND FED THE OLD TIPPLE
SOME COAL
WAS BROUGHT IN BY TRUCK
AND BELTED TO THE TIPPLE
Go to the bathhouse, put on your bank clothes, pick up your copper badge from the badge board, near the office (with your number on it), get your light from the lamp house, get on the cage, feel your feet fall out from under you, four hundred feet down, get into the man trip, watch the sparks fly, What a ride, fourty-five minutes and you were at your section. operate a buggy, miner or pinning machine until lunch time. Don't forget your lunch bucket, a drink of water and a bologni sandwich. Load 50 more 16 ton cars and you are back in the man trip, going home. Back to the bathhouse, hang up your badge, your lamp, take a shower, and you are on your way home. People see you with black around your eyes, and they know you are a coalminer. Once Harv Pack, a club owner in Hinton, WV once said to me, "Are you a miner?" I said, "No, I am 22 years old." He said, "No, I mean are you a coalminer?"

THE NEW TIPPLE
BUILT BY INDIA?
$24,000,000 DOLLARS?
LOADED ONTO COAL CARS
HAULED AWAY BY DIESEL ENGINES
TO MAKE STEAL AND ELECTRICITY

SHAFT HOLLOW

It is so good to see the tipple operate again. One trip was loaded. The tipple is running. Hopefully, it will stay operational for a long time.

TIPPLE

HERE COMES THE TRAIN
HEAR THE WHISTLE
MILES AWAY
WHERE IS IT GOING?
BLOCKED AGAIN
I DON'T MIND
The market for coal is dependent upon the price for oil. The price of oil is controled by Saudi Arabia. They deliberately hold down the price of oil to block their competition, coal. Legislation is needed to support production of steal and the development of power plants that burn coal to meet EPA standards. Subsidizing ould help.

UP THE ROAD
I MISS THE OLD STEAM ENGINE
THEY SHOOK THE GROUND
SPINNING THEIR WHEELS
CARS GO DOWN
THE SMOKE WOULD ROLL
How long will the new tipple last? Won't it, some day, become old? And, all of that coal beneath the tipple, won't it some day be mined? I just hope they don't destroy the mountains with strip mining. Deep mines have consequences; but, strip mining is permanent. We don't want to leave a mud hole.
